The White House is preparing to ban products from China’s Haitian province that have been implicated in deadly outbreaks of coronavirus in the United States.
According to The Wall Street Journal, officials will announce the ban Monday during a meeting with U.S. farmers.
The decision will likely face legal challenges.
China’s Haifeng County Health Bureau has reported that at least 10 people have died and thousands have been hospitalized following coronaviruses linked to the rice.
The agency also reported that a total of 895 people have tested positive for coronaviral illnesses in the region since the start of the pandemic.
In China, rice can be sold in supermarkets for about $5 a bag.
The new ban is the first in a series of actions the White House has taken against Chinese imports in response to the deadly coronavirets in the U.
