The Food and Drug Administration has launched an investigation into the company that owns Kroger’s popular chicken brown and white rice.
The FDA said Tuesday that the FDA is launching an investigation of the company after learning that the company sold more than 30 million pounds of brown rice in 2013 and 2014.
The investigation was launched after a USDA inspector discovered brown rice sales records from the same year, which showed the company was selling more than 2 million pounds per month of the product.
“The Food and Drugs Administration has initiated an investigation to determine whether the Kroger Corporation has violated federal food safety laws, the Food Safety and Inspection Service has opened an investigation on behalf of the Food and Products Administration, and the Food Products Safety and Safety Administration has advised the company of its right to file a civil lawsuit,” the FDA said in a statement.
“It is important to note that the Food Services Administration has issued a voluntary recall of some of Kroger Company’s products, and all products are no longer available.”
Kroger said it is working with the FDA to find the root cause of the issues.
The company said in an email that it “stands by our commitment to providing the highest quality of food products to our customers and customers in our communities.”
The company also said it has made “a number of changes” to the way it handles and markets its products and its process for preparing foods.
The complaint against Kroger comes just weeks after another lawsuit accusing the company, which has more than 60 stores in the U.S., of misleading consumers and investors.
The lawsuit alleged that the chain had sold products containing corn syrup that had been added to the products for added sweetness, while also selling rice and other foods that were “grossly over-processed” and lacked nutritional value.
Kroger has denied the allegations.
