Chinese scientists say that genetically modified brown rice could cause food allergies and possibly lead to human deaths.
In a study published in the journal Science, researchers from Beijing’s Beijing Institute of Technology and the University of California, Davis, said they have engineered a plant that produces rice resistant to herbicides and fungicides, and that the rice could be grown in a lab in the United States.
“The rice is resistant to the herbicides,” said Zhenjun Tang, a professor of agricultural chemistry and an author of the study.
“It’s like a wild rice.
The rice can withstand different environments and can grow in various environments.
We have created a rice that is resistant against a wide range of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides.
We think this rice can grow at least in the US, in the west.”
The researchers said the rice can also tolerate other pesticides, including chlorpyrifos and pyrethroid, that can damage the rice’s structure.
The scientists said that in addition to the rice, they could also grow rice from genetically modified bacteria.
“We want to grow rice that can tolerate all kinds of pesticides, not just the ones that are common in agriculture, like glyphosate and chlorpyrs and pyrogens,” Tang said.
“In the future, we want to plant rice that could be resistant to many other pesticides.
We don’t want it to be one of the more popular types of rice.””
This rice is a model for rice cultivation,” said Dr. Guoping Wang, an assistant professor at the Beijing Institute.
“We can do this in the lab.”
Wang said the study is the first to test the safety of rice genetically modified for resistance to these different herbicides.
“It’s not a huge risk.
We can’t kill the rice.
It’s not like an engineered rice,” Wang said.
Wang’s team is also developing a variety of rice engineered to tolerate glyphosate, which is a class of pesticides used to kill weeds in crops.
They are also developing rice that has been engineered to survive the herbicide glyphosate and other chemicals.
The team is now working to improve the rice with a gene that will allow it to withstand other chemicals, Wang said, adding that he and his colleagues are now testing the rice to see if it will be able to tolerate the herbicidal effects of glyphosate.
“There are other types of plants that have been developed that have developed resistance to a variety, and they have a certain ability to tolerate different types of chemicals,” Wang added.
“I think this is the kind of rice that we can be creating with a genetic modification.
This is what we can do in the future.”
The rice project has attracted attention in China because of the Chinese government’s role in promoting genetic engineering.
The Chinese government banned the cultivation of GM rice after scientists at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011 found evidence that the plant’s genetic material was engineered by a government-backed company, which they dubbed “Bengnan” (Big Brother).
A report released last year by the government showed that the Chinese National Food Administration, which oversees Chinese farming, had approved the cultivation and distribution of rice modified with genes from the biotech company “Bergnan.”
The Chinese government said the Chinese biotech company, Baojun Biotech, had developed and marketed the rice as a “speciality” to protect the nation’s food security and to improve agricultural productivity.
The Chinese state media has portrayed the rice project as an example of the country’s “great power,” and some of the world’s most powerful governments have called for China to ban GM rice.
But Wang said the project has nothing to do with China’s influence in the world, and is being promoted as an economic project that will help the Chinese people.
The researchers behind the research said they want to create rice that farmers can grow safely in their fields and sell to customers in the U.S. “The rice would be the most economical rice available in the market, but we are still in the process of developing a product that will be sold in the marketplace,” Wang told CBS News.
“If this rice is successfully produced and sold, this will be a huge help for the Chinese economy.”
